For five years ZACH Theatre has hosted a regional host for a nationwide play writing contest for middle school students sponsored by TYA/USA and AATE. This competition focused on giving voice to our nation’s young writers. The project looks to harness the creativity of young playwrights and bring focus to real world issues. This years theme is “Discovering Truths in Ourselves and Others”
A staged reading celebrating the work of all our playwrights will be held on this spring.
The mission of Young Playwrights for Change is to produce meaningful conversations about family that will ripple across our nation to provoke change. Our goal is to spark conversation and discussion throughout classrooms, schools, and communities about the chosen topic.
If you or your school is interested in participating, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to set up your free workshop or residency!
Last year ZACH recieved 250 plays from schools across Austin. Judges from ZACH, University of Texas, Creative Action, and other community members read and scored all the plays.
The 2016 winning play , A Stand for Equality… And Friendship, won 3rd place in the national competition and will be published in an anthology. Our 2015 Winner, The Flower Girl received an honorable mention and has been published. To purchase a copy or for more information click here.
