University of Michigan  is one of the top three MT programs in the country. We are pleased to announce that University of Michigan’s, Mark Madama, is interested in teaching a Master Class to all of our 9th-12th grade PPC students. This class is not open to the public. We are inviting him to work exclusively with ZACH Pre-Professional Company. I can’t tell you how amazing this opportunity is for our students! I am hoping that this will be a recurring Master Class. We have a PPC Guest Artist budget for fiscal year 2017-18 that we plan for in May. I have already budgeted for the scheduled guest artists for the season, so in order for us to bring Mr. Madama in, we will need financial assistance covering his travel expenses and lodging. ZACH will not be making a profit, this cost would strictly cover the expenses to bring him in.

Here are the details: Mark Madama | Master Class- Focusing on songs and material with Q &A:

  • Sunday, October 29
    • Suggested donation fee of $30 for students that would like to attend. 9th-12th grade PPC students are eligible to attend
    • Suggested donation fee of $55 for students that would like to workshop their songs. Only 11th-12th grade students are eligible to actively workshop.

Mark Madama has been at the University of Michigan since 2000, teaching musical theatre performance classes at levels from freshmen to senior; musical theatre history classes from the 1860s to the present; and directing numerous productions including Assassins, Rent, Big River, Guys and Dolls, Company, City of Angels, The Pajama Game, Nine, Ragtime, Into the Woods, Children of Eden, Good News!, The Full Monty and the Horton Foote play 1918. He has also worked on the yearly “Senior Showcase,” which is presented in Ann Arbor and New York.Before starting his tenure at Michigan, Mark worked as a director, writer and actor throughout the world. He has been one of the resident directors at Music Theatre of Wichita for over twenty years. Mark has also worked regionally at such theatres as The Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles, Studio Ensemble Theatre in New York, Casa Manana Musical Theatre, Pittsburgh CLO, Theatre Under The Stars, Kansas City Starlight, Theatre Memphis and Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma.

Mark’s production of Tintypes, in which he played a leading role as well as directing, was awarded Best Production at the Dundalk International Theatre Festival in Dundalk, Ireland, with Mark being awarded Best Director honors of the International Festival as well. His Tintypes also had the honor of representing the United States as the first American theatrical production to be presented in the Eastern block countries of Czechoslovakia and Poland after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Mark co-authored a new version of the 1927 musical Good News!, which has now been performed in over three hundred theaters in the United States, plus numerous international productions. He also wrote the book for the musical White Cliffs of Dover, which toured throughout the U.S. for over two years.

Mark has had the opportunity to teach master classes in many of the top performing arts studios, high schools and universities throughout the country, and continues to coach many professionals on upcoming auditions.

At the Elite Retreat, our students worked with National College Audition Coach, Mary Anna Dennard. We have decided to work closely with Mary Anna, because we believe her program offers many wonderful opportunities for our students. Mary Anna knows the majority of the Leading Fine Arts Schools Professors and Department Heads and is a major player in the College audition world.
Mary Anna also hosts a College Audition in Dallas. This audition is called “Moonifieds”. I think it is best described as a “Boutique audition”. The Monifieds audition is a national audition that hosts 22+ schools and 90 students.
Moonifieds is an excellent audition experience! Mary Anna has managed to keep this audition very exclusive and small. She is now working with us and has invited the PPC seniors to participate this audition. Those PPC students (that are not currently involved with Dave or Mary Anna) that wish to participate in Moonifieds, will need to sign up for the Online Acting Prep and also pay the Moonified fees.
This is a BIG deal for our students in PPC! This audition is closed to everyone else in the country except for PPC, Dave Clemons students and Mary Anna’s private students.

Event Details:
Includes workshops with college reps, parent ed and enrichment seminars. The bonding begins as you network with other young artists and parents. Best of all, you get up-close and personal with college recruiters as you learn first-hand about their acting and musical theatre programs.

  • Ellie Z., PPC Alumni– 
    • The audition is local (Dallas), so it is close and less expensive
    • Mary Anna organizes each audition for you
    • The entire process is very laid back, organized, and well planned.
    • It is small and not overwhelming
    • 90 students at the audition vs. 600 at Unifieds
    • You get more time in the room with each school. For example, I was asked to sing my third song at almost every audition. I was able to ask questions and get to know the people in the room.
    • There is only one dance call
    • It was so nice to have an organized, relaxed, audition process before I went to Unifieds.
    • There are smaller schools that do not attend Unifieds. These schools only have on-campus auditions, so
    • I was be able to audition for them in one place.
    • It is so fun! You bond and connect with the small group of MT students that are from all over the country!
    • LOVED this experience and it was totally worth it!

National Unified Auditions:
The National Unified Auditions is a loose coalition of college theatre programs that hold auditions at the same locations each year:

Members of Unifieds:
There are 25-30 “official” members of Unifieds: U Arts, Ball State, Boston Conservatory, Cincinnati, Cornish, Emerson, U Evansville, Hartt (U Hartford), Ithaca, Miami (Fla), Michigan, Montclair St., Northern Illinois, Oklahoma, Otterbein, Penn State, Point Park, Roosevelt, Santa Fe, SCAD, SMU, TCU, Utah, Viterbo, Webster.Many more schools conduct auditions in the same locations (25-50 more), but not all schools. To confirm that a school will be holding auditions at Unifieds, you have to go to the theatre department website for each school and check the dates and locations for their auditions.

ADDITIONAL UNIFIED Audition Information:
You have to audition separately for each school.
Students have to sign up for an audition with each school individually. Carefully check all application and audition registration procedures, they will vary from school to school. Some schools require you to apply in order to register for an audition slot, others do not.
Some schools require video prescreens to be submitted prior to granting an audition slot.
The audition list for some schools fill up fast. Some schools run out of slots by November.
All auditions are individual, each student auditions in a small conference room in front of a panel of faculty members.
Some Musical Theatre programs hold group dance calls for Musical Theatre auditions in addition to individual auditions, sometimes on a different day from individual monologue+songs auditions.
Multiple Dance calls for each school
Some schools do have walk-in slots available, although this is not guaranteed and walk-ins are highly unlikely to be available for the top programs.
Student organizes their own schedule
For Musical Theatre, an accompanist is provided by some schools, while other schools require the student to bring their accompaniment and a device to play the accompaniment (an iPod and a battery-powered speaker dock, for example).
There are over 600 students that audition in the three-five days.
I have also gathered information about Unifieds:

  • Ellie Z.-
    • There are more schools at Unifieds, so a lot of audition opportunities.
    • You have to do separate dance calls for each school.
    • For example, I had 7 dance calls and Elizabeth had 13. The reason I only had 7 dance calls is because I already knocked out my 1 dance call from Moonifieds where my schools already saw me dance, so it was a lot easier.
    • There wasn’t a lot of time in the room. It was very fast and they are strict about timing.
    • You set your schedule and sometimes the schedule is delayed.
    • There is not one cohesive organizer for the process. Each school is individual, so if one school is running over time, and you have 10 minutes to get to another audition far away because the first school is late…you have to figure out how to reschedule.
    • It is not organized, I would suggest taking a parent or coach to help you with your audition schedule and to help you stay on task.
